Watch Your Garden Grow – Pumpkin
Pumpkin Broccoli Chowder
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 ripe tomato, diced
1 large potato, diced
4 cups chicken stock, canned or fresh
1 bunch broccoli, tops cut into small florets, stems julienne into strips
3 cups fresh pumpkin puree (frozen or canned)
1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
1/4 to 1/2 cup canned evaporated skim milk
1.
In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-low heat. Add onions and saute slowly for 6 to 7 minutes. Add soy sauce and diced tomatoes and cook stirring often until tomato’s juice has evaporated, about 5 minutes.
2.
Transfer saute to a soup pot. Deglaze the skillet with a little stock, add to pot, and add remaining stock and pumpkin puree. Heat stirring often.
3.
In a separate pot cook diced potato in 1/2 cup boiling water until tender. When done, using a slotted spoon, transfer to soup pot.
4.
Add the broccoli to potato cooking liquid and blanch for 4 minutes, covered. Add broccoli and cooking liquid to soup pot.
5.
Then stir in enough milk to desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let soup cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot and the flavors have blended, 8 to 10 minutes. Do not let soup boil. Serve hot. As an entree, serves four.

What he said
A fun read called Pharyngula which is, as he puts it :”Evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal”
For D&D yesterday, I created a puzzle using the Substitution Cipher.
Also, Cipher Index has lots of other fun pen and paper ciphers.

Javascript D&D 3.5 Character Generator
This little program is my gift to my fellow-gamers, and my way of saying “thank you” to the hobby’s developers. Over a quarter-century, I have enjoyed a cordial relationship with people at TSR/WOTC. In return, I’m glad to help make the process of character creation easier for everyone. Happy adventuring!

Nifty box cutter
I was playing around building a hexagonal box with sloping sides. I didn’t remember the rules for how to figure out the angles for the miter guage and for the saw.
Fortunately, this is just what the internet was invented for. this page has a calculator for figuring out what angles to use to make a polygonal pyramid shape of any particular size.
Fun.
CSS tricks
I’m trying to learn more about CSS, so here are a few tricks that I’ve picked up….

A picture of Orion, my D&D figurine
The above image is actually an H2 text element that has been restyled to hide the text and show an image. This technique is useful for skinning a web page — you can simply put in placeholder text in <div> element with an appropriate ID. Then the CSS converts that to an image.
Note that in the previous example, there seems to be no way to push a contained box to the bottom of its container.
Next : how do you center horizontally in a box: use margin:auto;
Next : How do you center vertically? The containing block must have display: table-cell and vertical-align: middle.
My D&D Figurine
Isn’t he cute?

who comes up with this stuff
The second one uses star trek the next generation, picard riker and data and fuses it together with saturday night live and “what is love” pop song.
