DS warned me I’d be cursing. It was nailed to the house back behind the flashing. Sawsall and brute force got it out. Now it’s about to rain. We shall see how it holds up

Cleaning the gutters today I found a few interesting things. First we have this clamp-like thing that has been squirrel-chewed. It appears to have been removed from this vent. But what was its function?
Next I found that the corner of the gutter has come loose. Appears that it used to be welded. How to repair that?
